What’s my issue with social media?

We’re in an era of internet hyper consumption, and it’s unsustainable.

I’ve been wanting to write about this for a while now, but it felt slightly hypocritical to complain about not liking the feeling of pressure to be active on social media, while simultaneously, being on social media. I truly don’t want to be on social media out of obligation to “build a brand” “become a thought leader” or “generate leads”. I want to engage because I genuinely feel like it. I want to engage for leisure, to connect with other people, to find community, and authenticity. I don’t want to sell and/or be sold to at every click and scroll.

More and more lately, I’ve been curious about what the future holds. For example, what will social media look like in 5 years? What will media in general– digital and analog, look like in 10 years? What will the ways in which we organize ourselves (society) look like in 50 years? For some reason, we humans seem to be wired for short term, plagued with short-sightedness. I want to look beyond that, and peer into the proverbial “crystal ball”. With all the resources available to us today, what can we “know” about the future, or at the very least, intelligently predict?

I want the post-hyper consumerism era of the internet. What does that even look like? I guess the greater question is, what’s next for humanity?
